Las témperas de Southall desprenden una atmósfera de nostalgia por el pasado, un revival de los héroes y heroínas medievales mezclada con dibujos muy realistas. Todo es suave y cálido. Sin dudas, es un gran artista.
Y aunque el cuerpo principal de su trabajo comprende pinturas altamente elaboradas, también fue retratista y paisajista. El eminente crítico de arte John Ruskin admiraba sus dibujos y dijo que "nunca había visto una arquitectura mejor dibujada".
Llegó al mundo en Nottingham en 1861 y dejó este valle de lágrimas en 1944.
